Dr. Makkalearn Em is a board-certified gastroenterologist with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of digestive and liver diseases. His clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), therapeutic endoscopy, and hepatology. Dr. Em is known for his thoughtful, patient-centered approach and his dedication to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care.

Dr. Em earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Harvard College and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and served as Chief Resident at the University of California, Irvine, followed by a Gastroenterology fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Before joining Salem Gastroenterology Consultants in 2005, Dr. Em practiced gastroenterology in Florida. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds active medical staff appointments at Salem Hospital, Salem Endoscopy Center, and West Valley Hospital.

Dr. Em is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Oregon Medical Association, and the Marion-Polk Medical Society.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Em enjoys watching basketball, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with his family.
